Peel Regional Police responded to Tiny Treasure Mississauga Day Care Centre, located on King St. W., just after 10:30 a.m. after a worker called 9-1-1 to report the incident.
Staff locked the doors and ordered everyone to stay inside, police said.
The centre houses 68 children and 10 staff.
According to police, the man was told by staff to leave the building, and he fled the scene. No weapon was seen and nobody was injured, said Peel Cst. J.P. Valade.
Police have alerted Mississauga Transit and area businesses to the incident, and provided them with a description of the man.
He's described as white, clean shaven with short hair, wearing baggy beige and brown clothing.
Police checked the man's home, but he wasn't there.
