Delivering a campaign-style message to more than 500 party faithfuls at the Croatia Parish Park, the Prime Minister told supporters the Liberals have a “hidden agenda” to raise taxes.
“There is only one way to cut taxes and to keep them going down and that is to keep this Conservative government in office,” he said.
The Prime Minister said while “this Liberal soap opera has been going on,” his government has been establishing a record to be proud of.
“I have never felt more hopeful or confident about our future,” he said. “We have broken the Liberal lock on power, we demonstrated to Canadians that there is a better way to govern this country, and we’ve watched Canada on a Conservative path to a future of unlimited possibilities.”
The event was sponsored by the Mississauga-Erindale federal Conservative association, which has re-nominated Bob Dechert as the party’s candidate in the riding.
Dechert, however, shot down any thoughts of an early election.
“We’re just here for a family barbecue,” he said. “You’ll never know what can happen, but the official (election) date is October 2009.”
Conservative MP (Mississauga-Streetsville) Wajid Khan said he feels confident if there is to be a fall election.
“We’ve delivered for Mississauga,” he said. “People see it and that’s what people want.”
Khan, who introduced Harper, took notice that there were no thunder showers as forecast.
“God must be a Conservative,” he said.
Mayor Hazel McCallion, who attended the rally, said she knows when her municipal election as well as the provincial elections are, but has no clue as to when the federal election is.
“I think it’s time the federal parliament set a date for an election, rather than this guessing,” she said.
Other Conservative candidates in attendance included Melissa Bhagat (Mississauga East-Cooksville), Hugh Arrison (Mississauga South), Parm Gill (Brampton-Springdale), Bob Saroya (Etobicoke North), and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty (Whitby-Oshawa).
