August 15, 2008 09:45 AM - A Mississauga man is one of three charged following a string of convenience store and gas station heists across the GTA.
The York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit arrested the men Wednesday night when the latest of the robberies took place. They're charged in connection with five robberies, including two in York region.
On July 31, at about 3 a.m., two men entered a 7-Eleven located at 2067 Rutherford Rd., and one of the culprits pointed a gun at the lone employee. The victim was forced into a back room by one of the men, while the second man took cigarettes. The culprits fled through the side door, police said.
On July 21, at about 2 a.m., two masked men, one armed with a handgun, entered the Sunoco gas bar located at 2210 Stouffville Rd. They took cash from the register, and cigarettes, and fled the store on foot.
Police said the other incidents occurred on Aug. 6 and Aug. 8 in Toronto and Wednesday in Mississauga.
Najibullah Aminzadeh, 28, of Mississauga, Yunus Yaqubi, 18, of Toronto, and Nasir Ahmaddy, 20, of Vaughan, are each facing 20 charges, including robbery with a firearm and forcible confinement.
Police offer advice for employees who find themselves victims of a robbery.
"Be sure to cooperate with suspects and get the best description possible. Do not fight back. Report suspicious people and vehicles to police," said York Cst. Gary Phillips.
Store owners should also check and maintain surveillance video equipment and replace tapes often.
